Loosening the grip of cancer

Cancer is a scary word for many of us. It evokes images of loss and death. It touches whole families and communities, triggering responses in partners, children and friends that are often unexpected. To be sure, cancer is not just a disease. It is a fear that grips us.

We want to loosen that grip by looking honestly and accurately at the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, with special attention to breast cancer. Professor Arlene Chan, a well-known and respected Medical Oncologist in Perth, has kindly agreed to discuss the topic. She will not only focus on the condition itself, but will also address the grip that cancer so easily can have on the wider family. If, according to the Australian Institute for Health and Welfare, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer before they are 85 years of age, then this is a highly relevant issue. Someone we know will be affected. How will we respond? Come and interact with our guest panellist, Prof. Chan.

About This Event

The event will commence with an afternoon tea, after which Prof Chan will be invited to address us. There will be time for questions, and we will also hear from a cancer survivor. The occasion is designed to be of benefit for both men and women, of all ages.

The event will be held at the Palms Community Centre, corner of Rokeby & Thomas Roads, Subiaco, Saturday, 17 October 2015 (3:00 – 5:00pm, afternoon tea included).

Professor Chan graduated from the medical school of University of Melbourne, Australia and obtained her Fellowship in Medical Oncology from the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and a Masters of Medicine in Palliative Care from the University of Melbourne. She received a fellowship in breast cancer/cancer genetics from Princess Margaret Hospital, Toronto before returning to Australia as a Consultant Medical Oncologist at Royal Perth Hospital. She has been a breast cancer-specific oncologist at the Mount Hospital since 1999.

She is a professor at the Curtin Health Innovation Research Institute, Curtin University and the Director of the breast clinical trials unit at the Mount Hospital. She is a founding member of the Breast Cancer Research Centre – WA (a clinician driven, not-for-profit charitable breast cancer research group based in Perth) and serves as the Vice-Chair. She is a member of the academic steering committee of several breast cancer trials, has been an invited speaker to more than 130 national and international meetings on breast cancer and has authored more than 100 publications. Her interests include clinical research in understanding biological determinants of therapeutic response, optimizing symptomatic care in early and advanced breast cancer and developing data collection systems for clinical research and measuring patient outcomes. She has previously been the visiting professor for the Chinese International Medical Tribune in Shanghai and was a finalist of the Western Australia of the Year Awards in 2013.
